R. Kelly Reportedly Seeks Clemency From President Trump to Reduce 30-Year Prison Sentence

R&B singer R. Kelly has reportedly taken a new legal step in his effort to regain his freedom, formally requesting that President Donald Trump commute his 30-year federal prison sentence for sex trafficking and sex crimes.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Kelly submitted a clemency petition to the Office of the Pardon Attorney, the Department of Justice office responsible for reviewing requests for executive clemency before they are forwarded to the White House.

Clemency Request Follows Previous Appeal

The latest request comes just over a year after Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, publicly urged for the singer’s immediate release. At the time, Brindley alleged that prison officials had conspired with a member of the Aryan Brotherhood to have Kelly killed while incarcerated.

During a press conference following an emergency court filing, Brindley argued that Kelly’s constitutional rights had been violated.

“These are people that seek to kill Mr. Kelly rather than allow the corrupt criminal conduct of those who manufactured his convictions be exposed,” Brindley said.

The attorney also appealed directly to President Trump, asking that Kelly be released to home detention while legal issues surrounding his incarceration were addressed.

“R. Kelly does not have the time, with his life in danger, to go through the normal channels,” Brindley stated. “I will ask President Trump to help us, because we need him.”

Serving a 30-Year Federal Sentence

R. Kelly, whose legal name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently incarcerated at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Butner in North Carolina.

In 2022, he was convicted in separate federal cases involving sex trafficking, racketeering, and sex crimes involving minors. The convictions followed years of investigations, multiple allegations from victims, and high-profile court proceedings that drew national attention.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Kelly’s projected release date is January 31, 2045, when he will be 78 years old, unless his sentence is reduced or otherwise modified.

Will President Trump Grant Clemency?

At this time, there has been no indication that President Trump intends to act on Kelly’s request. Presidential clemency—including pardons and sentence commutations—is entirely discretionary, and only a small percentage of petitions submitted each year are ultimately granted.

Whether Kelly’s petition receives serious consideration remains to be seen, but the filing has already reignited public debate over celebrity clemency requests, criminal justice, and the use of presidential executive powers.
