Today in Black History: Magic Johnson Was Born

August 14, 1959 — Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. was born in Lansing, Michigan.
Before he became one of the most recognizable names in basketball, business, and philanthropy, Magic Johnson was a kid with a basketball and a dream.
Johnson went on to become one of the greatest point guards in NBA history, winning five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, three NBA MVP awards, and three NBA Finals MVP awards. His flashy passing, leadership, and larger-than-life personality helped define the Lakers’ legendary “Showtime” era of the 1980s.
But Magic’s impact didn’t stop at basketball.

After announcing in 1991 that he had contracted HIV, Johnson became one of the most prominent public figures educating people about HIV/AIDS at a time when misinformation and stigma were widespread. He transformed his platform into an opportunity for advocacy and education.
He also built a significant business empire, becoming an entrepreneur and investor in industries ranging from entertainment and sports to food service, real estate, and healthcare.
The lesson from Magic Johnson’s journey is bigger than basketball:
Your first chapter doesn’t have to define your entire story.
Magic became a champion on the court, but he also became a businessman, philanthropist, advocate, and community leader off it.
On his birthday, we celebrate not just the athlete, but the vision, resilience, and Black excellence behind the name.
