The legal drama just keeps piling up for Nicki Minaj. According to recent court documents, the hip-hop megastar is facing a potential default judgment after allegedly ghosting a lawsuit filed by her former legal team over hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid fees.
Here is a breakdown of what’s going on, how we got here, and what it could mean for the Pinkprint rapper.
To understand why Nicki is being sued now, we have to look back a couple of years. In 2023, a musician named Julius Johnson slapped Nicki and producer Mike Will Made It with a copyright infringement lawsuit. Johnson claimed that the beat for Nicki’s 2014 track “I Lied” (from The Pinkprint) was directly stolen from his 2011 beat titled “onmysleeve.”
According to Johnson, the beat was on a hard drive stolen during a 2013 studio session in Atlanta—a session that associates of Nicki and Mike WiLL allegedly had access to.
To fight the claim, Nicki hired the heavyweight law firm Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani LLP. The firm successfully navigated the dispute, which ultimately ended in a confidential settlement and a permanent dismissal with prejudice in December 2024.
While the copyright battle was put to rest, the bill allegedly went unpaid.
In March 2026, Gordon Rees filed a lawsuit against Nicki, claiming she owed them exactly $229,541 for their work on the “I Lied” case. But instead of fighting the lawsuit or settling the bill, court documents indicate that the rapper has completely ignored the filing since March.
Because Nicki has allegedly failed to respond to the lawsuit within the required timeframe, Gordon Rees has officially filed a motion for a default judgment.
In the legal world, a default judgment is essentially a victory by forfeit. If a defendant ignores a lawsuit, the judge can rule in favor of the plaintiff automatically. If the judge grants the motion, Nicki could be legally ordered to pay the full $229,541 without ever getting a chance to argue her side of the story in court.
This legal battle is just the latest in what has been an incredibly eventful 2026 for Nicki. While her legal team handles the courtroom drama, Nicki has been dominating cultural and political spaces:
Between political shoutouts, rap veteran disses, and multi-thousand-dollar lawsuits, the Barbz certainly have their hands full trying to keep up this year.
A formal court hearing has been scheduled for September 2026, where a judge will decide whether or not to officially grant the default judgment for the unpaid legal fees.
As of right now, Nicki Minaj has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. Whether her team will swoop in at the eleventh hour to answer the complaint or settle the balance remains to be seen.
Stay tuned as we track this story heading into the fall!
