🏛️ Shirley Chisholm Makes History in Presidential Politics

One of the defining moments associated with this period in American history is the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first Black candidate to seek the nomination of a major political party for President of the United States.

Although her historic presidential campaign officially launched in 1972, Chisholm spent years challenging barriers and advocating for equal opportunity in education, employment, and voting rights.

Her famous words continue to inspire generations:

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

🎶 Celebrating the Legacy of Harrison Ruffin Tyler

On July 13, 2025, Harrison Ruffin Tyler, the last living grandson of U.S. President John Tyler, passed away at the age of 96. While not Black history itself, his passing sparked conversations about the remarkable timeline connecting modern America to the nation’s earliest years.

For many Black historians, those conversations also highlighted how close the eras of slavery, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement truly are in America’s collective memory.
