Are We Supporting Black-Owned Media Enough?

Let’s be honest for a second.

We say we want change.
We say we want our stories told right.
We say we’re tired of mainstream media controlling the narrative…

But are we actually supporting the platforms that are built for us, by us?

📢 The Power of Black-Owned Media

Black-owned media has always been essential. From newspapers during the Civil Rights era to today’s independent blogs, podcasts, and platforms, these spaces exist to tell the truth from our perspective.

Mainstream media often filters, reshapes, or flat-out ignores Black voices.
Black-owned media doesn’t have that problem, it is the voice.

It highlights:

  • Real community issues
  • Independent artists and creators
  • Cultural truth, not watered-down narratives

But here’s the problem…

🚨 Attention vs Support

We’ll scroll past a Black-owned platform…
But stop and engage with a major outlet.

We’ll say “support Black business”…
But won’t click the link, share the post, or visit the website.

Support isn’t just about liking the idea.
It’s about action:

  • Clicking articles
  • Sharing content
  • Subscribing
  • Spending money when needed

Because attention without support doesn’t build anything.

💰 The Funding Gap Is Real

Most Black-owned media platforms are underfunded and overlooked. Meanwhile, major corporations pour millions into mainstream outlets that don’t truly represent us.

That creates a cycle:

  • Less funding = less reach
  • Less reach = less visibility
  • Less visibility = slower growth

And then people say, “Why isn’t there a bigger Black media presence?”

It’s not always about talent.
It’s about support.

📱 We Have the Power Now

The difference today? We don’t need permission anymore.

With social media, websites, and independent platforms, we can:

  • Build our own audiences
  • Control our own narratives
  • Monetize our own content

But none of that works if the community doesn’t show up.

⚖️ Accountability Goes Both Ways

Now let’s be real on the other side too…

Not all Black-owned media is created equal.

Some platforms need to:

  • Improve quality
  • Stay consistent
  • Actually deliver value

Support shouldn’t be blind, but it should be intentional.

If we want excellence, we also have to build it, not just criticize it.

✊🏾 So… Are We Doing Enough?

If Black-owned media disappeared tomorrow, would we feel the impact?

Or would we just go back to consuming whatever is pushed to us?

That’s the real question.

Because at the end of the day, supporting Black-owned media isn’t just about content…

It’s about:

  • Ownership
  • Representation
  • Power

And if we don’t invest in our own voices, someone else will always control the narrative.
